Stress Level and the Difference in Handling Situations According to the Personality Type of Some Students Who Major in Dental Hygienics

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the stress level and the differences in handling situations according to the personality types of some students who major in dental hygienics. For this study, the MBTI personality test and survey were conducted from May 20, 2013 to May 24 of the same year for a total of 208 students who major in dental hygienics department, A university located in A city, North Gyeongsang Province, and the following results were obtained in relation to the type of personality, stress, difference of level in sub-factors, and method for coping with the stress. First, the introvert personality group was found to have higher stress level when the stress levels of extrovert personality group and introvert personality group were compared. In relation to the stress level of the sensible personality group and intuitive personality group, the intuitive personality group was found to have higher stress level. Second, the emotional personality group was found to have higher stress level when the stress levels of logical personality group and emotional personality group were compared. Moreover, the judgemental personality group was found to have higher stress level when the stress levels of judgemental personality group and perceptive personality group were compared. Third, the introvert personality group was found to have higher level of coping with the stress when the extrovert personality group and introvert personality group were compared in relation to the level to cope with the stress. In addition, the intuitive personality group was found to have higher level of coping with the stress when sensible personality group and intuitive personality group were compared in terms of the level to cope with the stress. Fourth, the logical personality group was found to have higher level of coping with the stress when the logical personality group and emotional group were compared in terms of the level to cope with the stress. Meanwhile, the judgemental personality group was found to have higher level of coping with the stress when the judgemental personality group and perceptive group were compared in connection with the level to cope with the stress. This study is limited as it analyzed only some students majoring in dental hygienics, and therefore the results of this study are difficult to be generalized. It is recommended that the succeeding studies should look into the MBTI personality type involving the students majoring in dental hygienics nationwide, and furthermore, systematic education programs for in-depth understanding need to be established to promote the ability of students majoring in dental hygienics to better cope with stress, adapt themselves to campus lives and vocational lives.
